Supreme Court sides with California church on COVID restrictions

Washington — The Supreme Court on Thursday sided with a California church challenging Governor Gavin Newsom’s restrictions on indoor worship services.

In a short unsigned order with no dissents, the Court tossed out an order from the federal district judge Central District of California, which had upheld Newsom’s restrictions.

The justices vacated the district judge’s ruling and sent the case back down to the lower court for further consideration in light of the Court’s Thanksgiving eve ruling in Roman Catholic Diocese of Brooklyn, which struck down New York Governor Andrew Cuomo’s restrictions.

The California case was brought by Harvest Rock Church and Harvest International Ministries. The faith-based groups argued Newsome’s “tiered” restrictions, which limited public gatherings based on health conditions, where unconstitutional. Harvest Rock asserted the restrictions discriminated against religious institutions while allowing nonregligious entities greater freedom.
