FREE FALL: 10,000 American Restaurants Close in Three Months

WASHINGTON — America’s restaurants are hurting, according to a new letter sent to Congress from National Restaurant Association. The group estimates that 10,000 American restaurants have closed in the past three months.

The group said on Monday, “As of today, 17% of restaurants—more than 110,000 establishments—are closed permanently or long-term.”

The group released results from a survey of 6,000 restaurant operators, revealing that 87% of full-service restaurants reported an average 36% drop in revenue and 83% expects sales to be “even worse” over the next three months as COVID-19 restrictions continues to unleash economic turmoil the United States.

Government mandates on indoor dining capacity, lockdowns and curfews have ravaged the industry, prompting protests and backlash.

The owner of SlapFish, Chef Andrew Gruel, had this to say in response to California Governor Newsome’s harsh restrictions:

The National Restaurant Association is publicly pleading with Congress to pass new stimulus to help the fledgling industry.
