Scrooge move? House GOP Stops Christmas Eve Attempt to Pass $2,000 COVID Relief Payments

Rep. Steny Hoyer offered the proposal today, but it was blocked by the House GOP

In a seemingly scrooge move on Christmas Eve, House Republicans blocked a Democratic attempt to pass $2,000 direct payments to Americans, as the fate of the massive coronavirus relief package passed by Congress earlier in the week hangs in the balance.

CNCB reports: The House tried to pass the $2,000 payments during a pro forma session on Christmas Eve day, a brief meeting of the chamber where typically only a few members attend. Democrats aimed to approve the measure by unanimous consent, which means any one lawmaker can block it.

Earlier this week, President Trump threatened to veto the proposed bill if Congress did not increase the payments from $600 to $2,000 while cutting the wasteful spending projects.

Rep. Steny Hoyer, D-Md., offered the proposal today from the House floor, but was blocked because the measure was not approved by House Minority Leader Rep. Kevin McCarthy, R-Calif, CNBC reports.

  1. Horrid headline! Not appropriate for the circumstances involved.

How about the $25,000,000 for Congressional pay raises. Congressmen starving on $174,000 per year stipend need a $57,000 per year raise while Joe Sixpack gets $600 one time. Where is that headline?
